Hubby and I like eating out in Marylebone. There is a pretty high street, a trendy vibe, and of course the fabulous Conran Shop. I read in the evening standard that the newly opened Cafe Luc was offering a £1 set meal deal for lunch and dinner, for a limited period. I managed to book us in for Sunday dinner for the £1 deal which only applies to one person.
Hubby ordered from the set menu and I opted for the ala carte. First up, steamed scallops for me.
The dish was a scallop broth with courgettes, cucumber, broad beans and fennel, and was very tasty. I dipped some bread into the broth and it was lovely. Probably a pricey starter at £10.
Hubby had smoked salmon and cream cheese. He said that the cream cheese was wonderfully fluffy and gave the smoked salmon a lift. The only thing missing was a squeeze of lemon, but then again hubby would have lemon in his coffee if you would let him.
I ordered creamy risotto with peas and shiitake and it was a very fulfilling and comforting dish. The shiitake lent some meatiness to the dish, and plenty of parmesan shavings for added decadence. (You can tell I’ve watched far too many episodes of Bill’s).
Hubby’s steak with peppercorn sauce was the star of the evening. I had a small taste of the sacred cow, served with a side of frites and it was divine.
I was too full for sweet treats. Hubby had dessert included in his set meal, and he opted for lemon tart, raspberries and Chantilly cream. This was right up his street and he really enjoyed it. The lemon curd and pastry were slightly too eggy for me, but it was still a very nice finish to a meal.
We were very pleased with the meal. The waiters were attentive, and the decor transported us back to somewhere we’ve dined in New York. Nice leather seats, dark decor, bright lights, shiny wine glasses hanging above the bar… you get my drift.
Would we go back? If we had guests, yes as the food was delicious. However, given that there are good deals to be had for a meal out, we’re keen to try out more restaurants and see what is on offer.
Cafe Luc is on 50, Marylebone High St.
