Naan bread recipe

I knew I couldn’t serve Butter Chicken without Naan bread.  I found an easy recipe here, modified it slightly and the result was absolutely tasty roti.   We mopped up the butter chicken sauce with warm, garlicky Naan. 

Ingredients: (makes 4 Naan bread)

  • 1 cup of plain flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • a pinch of bicarbonate of soda
  • 1/2 tsp castor sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup yoghurt
  • 1 tbsp garlic butter


  1. In a bowl, mix in all the dry ingredients
  2. Make a well in the middle and add in the wet ingredients
  3. Combine the ingredients to form a dough (you make need to dust some flour in if the mixture is too wet)
  4. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and leave to rest for 20 minutes
  5. Cut the dough into 4 segments and roll each one into a small ball
  6. Dust a clean surface with flour
  7. Use a rolling pin to roll out each dough ball to form your roti (mine was about 2 mm thick)
  8. Heat a non stick frying pan and cook each rolled out roti for 3 minutes on either side
  9. Keep warm on a plate and brush the top of each roti with garlic butter
