Breakfast with baby – Banana oats

I have taken to sharing my breakfast with my little girl,  the bear.   It’s a rainy morning today which is the perfect weather for porridge.  I re-stocked a packet of Flahavan’s oats through Ocado this week and have been keen to make a dent in it.    A Bill Granger recipe from his book Sydney Food came to mind, which called for buttered apples, maple syrup and sugar.   I’m trying to keep the bear’s palate simple so this is a very basic modification of the recipe.  Scraping the blog-post barrel, to some.   But it was a hearty breakfast and the bear loved it.

Ingredients: (serves 1 mama, and a little baby)

  • 35g oats (I used Flahavan’s)
  • 150g semi-skimmed milk
  • 150g water
  • 1 ripe banana, sliced


  1. Place the oats in a saucepan along with the milk and water
  2. Turn the heat on low and leave the oats to cook for 3 minutes
  3. Add the banana to the oats, stir and cook until almost all the liquid is gone (another 2 to 3 minutes or so) and the banana is soft, but not mushy
  4. Serve immediately
